Renate Bloem
CONGO President

Elected for a second three year term by the CONGO General Assembly
(December 2003)
Brief Bio Data Ms.
Bloem was born in Germany. She completed studies in Medicine, Languages
and Literature at the Universities of Bonn, Munich and New York
(Columbia University). She has taught at international schools and
cultural Institutions.
Since 1985: NGO work, UN Representative for the World Federation
of Methodist and Uniting Church Women. Advocate for human rights,
in particular for the human rights of women and children. Involved
in the Drafting of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, (Art.
37d) and, after adoption, in the promotion of children's rights.
Lead
her organization to the World Conferences on Human Rights (Vienna
1993), the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995) and the
World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children
(Stockholm 1996) In 1997, elected President of the NGO Committee
on the Status of Women (Geneva) and Co-ordinating Committee Member
of the NGO Forum for Health. Also serving as Member of the Management
Team of the Focal Point on Sexual Exploitation of Children. Many
national and international speaking engagements, including at church
community level on NGO/UN work, as well as at Global Policy Dialogue
level, and widely traveled.
Organized
numerous seminars and consultations, including in 1998 one on "Gender
and Health", together with WHO, coordinated the Health program
for the 1999 Seoul Conference, and, during UN meetings, set up caucus
activities on lobby and advocacy.
In January 2000 responsible, together with her Committee on the
Status of Women, for organizing the NGO Working Session, preceding
the ECE Regional Preparatory Meeting for Beijing +5, largely hailed
as a model for NGO/UN partnership. Actively involved in the whole
review process of Beijing and Copenhagen + 5.
She was elected President of CONGO at the General
Assembly in November 2000. In this capacity she has been
involved in numerous UN meetings, lead a CONGO delegation to the
World Conference Against Racism, the World Summit on Sustainable
Development and organized through the CONGO WG on Asia the Asian
Civil Society Forum 2002 in Bangkok.
She follows a Strategic Plan for CONGO which is based on her priorities:
Outreach, Dialogue, Training, Communication and Membership Drive
and Service.
Renate Bloem is married with two children.
