The NGO Committee on the United Nations International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples includes Indigenous Peoples, representatives of International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). It is a Special Committee member of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO).

The NGO Committee began its work on October 16, 1991, seeking to strengthen the effectiveness of the United Nations with regard to the 1993 United Nations International Year of the World's Indigenous Peoples. On December 8, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly launched the International Decade, and the NGO Committee transferred its mandate from the International Year to supporting the International Decade (1995-2004).

With the launching of the International Decade, the United Nations has pledged to improve the situation of over 300 million Indigenous Peoples worldwide. The General Assembly resolutions have proposed to strengthen international cooperation in such areas as human rights, the environment, development, education, and health.

The mission of the NGO Committee on the United Nations International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples is to:

Support the Decades Program of Activities (A/Res/50/157), including the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (August 9);
Promote the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the support the recently established Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues;
Educate the international community about the concerns and issues facing Indigenous Peoples,
Disseminate information about the Decade to Indigenous Peoples and relevant NGOs. The NGO Committee on the United Nations International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples meets once a month in New York City and invites your participation. Contact numbers are listed at the top of the page.

EL COMITE DE LA ORGANIZACION NO-GUBERNAMENTAL DE LAS NACIONES UNIDAS DECADA INTERNACIONAL DE LOS PUEBLOS INDIGENAS DEL MUNDO

El comité de la organización no-gubernamental de las naciones unidas Década Internacional de Los Pueblos Indígenas, está constituido por: pueblos Indígenas representantes de organizaciones no-gubernamentales internacionales (ONGs) y organizaciones con base en la comunidad (OBCs). Es miembro del comité especial de la Conferencia de Organizaciones No-gubernamentales (CONGs), la cual tiene una relación de consulta con las Naciones Unidas.

Este comité comenzó su trabajo el 16 de octubre de 1991, con el objectivo de poder mejorar la efectividad del trabajo de las Naciones Unidas en relación al Año Internacional de Los Pueblos Indígenas del mundo (1993). El 8 de diciembre de 1994, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, lanzó la Década Internacional y las ONGs transfirieron su mandato del Año Internacional en apoyo de la nueva Decada Internacional.

Con el lanzamiento de la Década Internacional, las Naciones Unidas se ha comprometido a mejorar la situación de más de 300 millones de personas indígenas en todo el mundo. Las resoluciones de la Asamblea General han propuesto fortalecer la cooperación internacional en áreas como derechos humanos, el medio ambiente, desarrollo, educación y salud.

La misión del comité de la ONG de las Naciones Unidas Década Internacional de los Pueblos Indígenas és:
- Apoyar el programa de actividades (A/Res/50/157), que incluye el Día Internacional de las poblaciones indígenas del mundo (9 de agosto).
- Promover la adopción de la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de Los Pueblos Indígenas y apoyar el recientemente establecido forum permanente para la causa indígena.
- Educar a la comunidad internacional sobre las inquietudes y los problemas con los que se enfrentan Los Pueblos Indigenas.
- Difundir información sobre la Década a los mismas Pueblos Indigenas y a las ONGs relevantes.
El comité ONG de las Naciones Unidas Década Internacional de Los Pueblos Indígenas del mundo, se reune una vez al más y le invita a participar en dichas reuniones.
