WOMAN by WOMAN:
New Hope for the Villages of India

On April 5, the NGO Committee on Population and Development will present the New York premiere of filmmaker Dorothy Fadiman's latest production at the Ford Foundation Auditorium. WOMAN by WOMAN: New Hope for the Villages of India is a half-hour documentary directed by the Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning Ms. Fadiman and produced through Concentric Media.

WOMAN by WOMAN documents the stories of women as they progress toward personal freedom in some of the least developed areas of rural India. Vivid images portray the depth of village humanity, the beauty of the countryside, and the toll of centuries of poverty. We meet women who are stepping forward out of seclusion to serve in their communities, and we learn about Janani, a group that trains women to become family planning counselors in their villages. These women become role models by developing the confidence to go beyond traditional boundaries. According to Ms. Fadiman, they "...are among the most visionary, courageous women in the country."

This film is the first segment of a three-part series by Ms. Fadiman titled From the Grassroots Up: Village Solutions to a Global Crisis. The series will profile women in three countries - Ethiopia, India, and Mexico - who have become leaders in the fields of health, family planning, and community development.

The production is funded by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The producers are Dorothy Fadiman and Kristin Atwell. The associate producer is Eve Eisenberg. The cinematographer/field producer is Daniel Meyers. The film was edited by Kristin Atwell. Music is by Beth Quist and Erika Luckett. The executive producer is David J. Andrews.
