The NGO Committee on
HIV/AIDS addresses the policy discussions within the UN system of the HIV/AIDS
epidemic by advocating for global action related to the epidemic; strengthening
and supporting an expanded response for the prevention of transmission of
HIV; the provision of care and support; reducing the vulnerability of individuals
and communities to HIV/AIDS including societal stigma associated with the
disease; and alleviating the impact of the epidemic. It carries out this advocacy
in relation to the various UN Commissions: Social Development, Sustainable
Development, the Status of Women, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and
the General Assembly. Committee members keep one another informed and deliver
group statements to the UN voicing ideas and positions on key issues related
to HIV/AIDS.
