Short Meeting with Ms. Stephanie Labrecque Saganash:
A representative of the Grand Council of the Crees

CONGO: What issue about the Crees have you raised at the sessions this week?

Ms. Saganash: In Quebec, treaties and agreements have been signed concerning our territories and natural resources, but these papers that we signed always have something different from the original vocal agreements. That is discrimination and a racist policy of the Quebec government. What we agree upon is not respected.
[For example], in Val d'Or, which is a white community close to ours, the Cree kids aren't respected or welcomed into the community. The whites consider themselves to be more intelligent and better educated than the Crees. A lot of racist attitudes exist and discriminate against [my people]. People do not seem to be able to live together harmoniously.
