Johannesburg 2002: The World Summit on Sustainable Development (also known as Rio+10) took place 26 August - 4 September 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Civil Society Forum: 19 August - 4 September 2002 at the Expo Centre (NASREC) located south of Johannesburg. The Forum opened to all Major Groups identified in Agenda 21.

The Fourth and Final PrepCom held at the ministerial level from 27 May to 7 June in Bali produced a draft Declaration and a draft Plan of Action. Informals were held Friday 24 May through Sunday 26 May. An overview of the 4th PrepCom can be found on the Johannesburg Summit website.



The Conference of NGOs (CONGO) will be responsible for a Commission on "Sustainable Development and the Millennium Development Goals" during the WSSD in J'burg. This Commission is part of the official (provisional) agenda for the Global Peoples Forum, and will be held on Monday 26 August, 13h30 - 17h30 at NASREC. It will be one of the Commissions under the overall theme of Poverty Eradication as a Priority for Sustainable Development.

The Commission will address stategy issues and make recommendations on
- how MDGs can be made a key focus at the WSSD
- how MDGs cristallize commitments made throughout the UN Conferences of the
90s
- how MDGs can be a tool for implementation
- how MDGs can be (or are not) effective in bridging the gaps and divides between rich and poor, the global North and South and can be made a blueprint for sustainable development.


A People's Forum took place parallel to PrepCom IV in Indonesia.

Major Groups as defined by Agenda 21 will be accredited to participate at the Summit.

The Johannesburg Summit will include Plenary Sessions, Multi-Stakeholder Dialogues, Round Table Discussions and Partnership Initiatives meetings as well as side events organized by governments and Major Groups.

The Commission on Sustainable Development is the Secretariat for the Summit.
Linkages is provided by the International Institute for Sustainable Development, publishers of the Earth Negotiations Bulletin. It is designed to be an electronic clearing-house for information on past and upcoming international meetings related to environment and development policy.
