Latin American and Caribbean Seminar
Partnerships for a New Era

Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
June 1 - 4, 2004 • Santiago, Chile

Final Report from the LAC Seminar, in English and Spanish

Presented by CONGO in collaboration with the NGO section of DESA and the World Federation of United Nations Associations, under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and UN/DESA

The Latin American and Caribbean Seminar (LAC) begins an ongoing process to facilitate dialogue, capacity building, and partnerships between public and private sector organizations towards the establishment of sustainable programs and projects to achieve the MDGs in the region.

Latin America and the Caribbean are in the midst of major political, social, economic, and institutional transformations. Lack of access to training, resources, and effective partnerships can hinder development. Collaborative interventions are key to achieving the MDGs in the region.

At the 2000 United Nations (UN) General Assembly´s Millennium Summit, 189 countries adopted an ambitious agenda to reduce poverty and improve lives. The MDGs are a set of 8 time-bound goals, with targets and indicators that the UN Development Programme extracted from the UN Millennium Summit Declaration. UN and international efforts in achieving these goals include operational support, research initiatives, and awareness campaigns.

Accomplishing this agenda will require multi-stakeholder cooperation and collaborative action from the UN, governments, NGOs, the private sector and foundations. The LAC Seminar was developed to facilitate this collaborative process in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

The primary goals of the LAC Seminar were:

  • To build LAC organizations´ capacities to effectively achieve the MDGs
  • To provide a space for innovation and partnership between the UN, governments, the private sector, and civil society, especially NGOs
  • To educate NGOs about the UN and how to effectively partner with the UN

The seminar was over 4 days at the UN Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC/CEPAL) facilities in Santiago de Chile.
