Resources by Issue: MDGs

The Millennium Development Goals have been derived by the Millennium Declaration adopted by 147 Heads of State and government ad the Millennium Assembly in September 2000. The MDGs are a set of 8 goals assorted with specific indicators and timeframes that government have committed themselves to achieve by 2015. The first MDG aims to halve extreme poverty by 2015 and the others deal with social issues that somehow cristallyse the commitments taken at the world conferences of the nineties in terms of women's rights, education, health, environment, etc. CONGO has been a co-organizer of the Millennium NGO Forum that has preceded the official meeting of the General Assembly in 2000 and since the beginning it has been at the forefront of raizing the awareness of NGOs about the existence of the Goals, in order to keep governments accountable, and help them assessing their implementation. We do this mainly in the regions - through our regional civil society fora -, at major UN commission and events and through the Millennium + 5 network that has prepared the official assessment of the implementation of the MDGs by governments in September 2005.
