Following is the text of a statement made by Afaf Mahfouz to the ECOSOC Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations on 16 June, 1999. Following upon her suggestion of a series of consultations for NGO representatives andrepresentatives of governments [mentioned at the end of this document], thefirst such consultation will take place on Friday, 1 October, from 10: 00 a.m. - 12: 00noon. We will provide more information on venue and proposed agenda bymid-September.
