2nd cycle of Universal Periodic Review (5-19 May 2008, Geneva)
Ambassador Doru Costea, President of the Human Rights Council, would like to meet with NGOs for an informal discussion on wrap up to the 1st UPR WG and in the perspective of the 2nd UPR Working Group starting next week. Date: Wednesday 30 April 2008 (tomorrow) - Time: 11.00-12.00 - Venue: Room XXIV, Palais des nations, Geneva

The new review mechanism of the Human Rights Council, established by GA Resoltuion 60/251 and by the Human Rights Council in Resolution 5/1 of 18 June 2007, opens a number of avenues for NGO participation. 48 countries will be reviewed in 2008, 16 of them between 7 and 18 April 2008.

CONGO will convene daily NGO meetings to facilitate NGO strategizong and information sharing, every day between 7 and 16 April, 6.00-7.00 pm in Room XXIII of Palais des Nations)

1st UPR Cycle (2008)

CONGO convenes daily NGO meetings on the Universal Periodic Review during the session of the HRC WG on UPR, from 7 to 16 April, between 6.00 and 7.00 in Room XXIII. In addition CONGO also convened two other NGO meetings:

The Council, sitting as a working group, will review 48 member states every year during three sessions of the working group, two weeks for each. As selected by drawing of lots on 21 September 2007 the 6th session of the Human Rights Council, the order of review of countries within the UPR mechanism for the 2008 cycle will be as follows (countries drown by lots to serve in the respective troikas of rapporteurs are indicated in italic):

25 January 2008 for the 6 first countries (Gabon, Ghana, Peru, Guatemala, Benin, Republic of Korea); 8 February 2008 for the 10 other countries (Switzerland, Pakistan, Zambia, Japan, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, France, Tonga, Romania, Mali).
