20th CONGO General Assembly

The 20th General Assembly of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations was held in Geneva, Switzerland in November 1997. The theme of the Assembly was "Defining the Future," and member organizations considered the challenges the United Nations and NGOs face heading into the 21stCentury. The Report of the Debate on this theme illustrates these challenges and some of the strategies NGOs are developing to meet them.

Many of the decisions taken at the Assembly have important implications for the future of CONGO and NGOs with respect to the United Nations system. The 20th General Assembly passed resolutions on each of the following topics:

• Defining the Future
• The Forum of the Millennium 
• NGOs and the UN General Assembly
• Human Rights
• Eradication of Poverty
